Event Structures invested in a Euro Truss Roof System with integrated LED and PA wings, built on a Layher Scaffolding Under-Construction with Nivtec plates (decking).

When embarking on this sizeable investment, Event Structures sought the expertise of Alex Sanfilippo and Adriano Landi from Shattered Glass AV & Staging.  Alex was instrumental in procuring the Colab Stageline Mobile Stage in 2005.  “Having travelled the Americas to make a decision on recommending the Stage Line Mobile Stage and having worked with the stage for the last 3 years, we had a clear idea in mind on the criteria for a stage – one that would surpass the demands of the staging environment in South Africa for years to come”.

Event Structures appointed Shattered Glass AV & Staging as the Technical Management Company for the roof system and Alex and Adriano went to work!  For Alex, he wanted a system that ranked safety first and following extensive research on European staging and roof systems, the Euro Truss system with the Layher Scaffolding Under-Construction was chosen.  Adriano Landi – Technical Director of Shattered Glass, remarked – “In our industry, safety isn’t simply the best way - it is the only way.  The Event Structures’ system is unique in South Africa in that it integrates the roof and deck to provide and extremely safe roof system.” 

For Adriano Landi, Branding Opportunities for the client were also essential.  “When hosting events that would require a stage of these dimensions, the client is investing a lot of money.  In order to maximize their investment in the event, the Event Structure System offers Branding Opportunities on the back of the stage as well as on the side wings.”

Another unique property of the System is the high loadability.  There are 8 towers, each 12m high that allow 2 x 25sqm LED screens as well as a large scale line array and lighting to be hung on one integrated structure.

Getting down to technicalities, the effective deck size of the system is 28m x 14m with 120sqm2 under roof.  The system has been designed to be easily upgradeable to a 16m x 12m roof system.  The roof clearance off the deck is 11m and the deck height varies from 1.5m – 2m.

“Knowing the correct set up, following the safety procedures and being able to enjoy full utilization of the System is not something that you can glean from a manual, “ says Alex. “We were delighted to host Henk Tiekstra from Euro Truss, a Dutch based company, for comprehensive training on the system.”

Henk spent 4 days training a select team from Shattered Glass on the intricacies of the system. Alex Sanfilippo, Adriano Landi, Richard Horwell, Denver Bussy, Peter Mulauzi and Lee Kent slogged it out under the elements getting to grips with each interlocking piece of the system.  Richard Horwell remarked – “As the head of Shattered Glass lighting, I am very excited at the opportunities and options that the System will offer us and I can’t wait to plan, plot and programme!”

Well, Richard’s wish was granted when the Event Structure System made it’s debut in March 2008 when a 10 000 strong crowd watched it take centre stage at the Wanderer’s Club at the JP Morgan Challenge.  From there it has been used on many sizeable events and continues to be a brand worth reckoning with.
